E CITY Program Highlights - Fall 2006

East Technical High School and E CITY- Fall 2006

Dealer Tire and E CITY teamed up a third time, to take entrepreneurship education to the students at East Technical High School!  Thank you, Scott Mueller and all of our friends at Dealer Tire!   Dealer Tire has contributed the $15,000 needed for the program and 13 Dealer Tire employees have or will be volunteering time as guest speakers, business plan coaches, and business plan competition judges this fall.  Special thanks to Scott Mueller for believing in this program, to Pete Waters (CFO) for teaching our students the importance of financial ratios, and to Dean Mueller, who served as a judge at the final competition.

Thank you too, to independent business owner, Steve Presser, who welcomed East Tech students to his store- “Big Fun,” on Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights.  Students had a tour of the store, and learned how and why Steve started his novelty/gift business, and what his joys and challenges have been.  And we all had “big fun” browsing, reading goofy cards, experimenting with noisemakers, gagging at fake “barf,” trying our hands at magic, reminiscing about toys from our childhood, and wearing President Bush masks.  We left there light-hearted and eager to return.  Thank you, Steve, for your friendship and generosity in sharing your business secrets with our students.

Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher (CET), Susan St. Aubyn, East Tech student, and E CITY Director of Growth, Mike Ruff.

Steve Presser and E CITY students.

East High School and E CITY- Fall 2006

Thank you, Key Foundation, for funding E CITY’s entrepreneurship program at East High again this year!

During one class, CET Andre Haynes led his E CITY students through this lesson developed by Katerina Zacharia, NFTE CET:

Everyone knows and recognizes the high quality of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar, HOWEVER, it has the lowest market share within the chocolate industry!  Very few youth buy the Hershey chocolate bar.

Let’s pretend that you (E CITY students) have been hired to redesign the Hershey’s marketing strategy in order to reach into the youth market.  You cannot change the product itself, but you may decide to change the packaging, brand image, and name.

This exercise requires the students to study Hershey’s current advertising, its competitors’ marketing strategies, and its image among youth.  Students must then think creatively and come up with new advertisements, packaging, logo and/or promotional plan and present it to their peers.

The students were enthusiastic about the assignment…but very few of them could refrain from eating the sample Hershey bar that Mr. Haynes gave at the beginning of the project!  Hershey bars are apparently very popular at East High when there are no other choices.

Funny, a number of the students ended up creating candy-selling businesses and making quite a profit right there at East High.  No plain chocolate Hershey bars, however.
Congratulations to these winners of the East High Business Plan Competition:
1st Place:  Re’Shawn Cleveland

2nd Place:  (4-way tie!):

                Donte Williams

                Cashawndra Watkins

                Tashonna Wells

                Qua’Shonda Graham

Thank you, Andre Haynes, for being our Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher and caring so deeply about these students.

John F. Kennedy High School-Fall 2006
Sometimes the field trips come to us!

We thank Nate Miracle of Miracle Mobile Fitness for bringing his business to our students at John F. Kennedy High School!  (What a great savings on our typical field trip transportation costs!).

Nate drives a HUGE van filled with weights and work-out equipment, and takes his personal training expertise to his clients- at their homes and places of employment.  Gone are the excuses about not being able to get to the gym!  The gym comes to you, thanks to Nate.

Nate was very generous in sharing his story with our students.  He wondered if he had enough experience to be of help to them (he’s been in business for one month!), but we emphasized that getting started is often the most difficult thing for our young students.  Nate was full of encouraging words and said what we hear many entrepreneurs say:  “Don’t listen to the people who tell you that you can’t do it.” Learn more about Nate and his unique business by visiting his web site:  www.miraclemobilefitness.com.

We also thank our CET at JFK- Tanisha Jackson-Long, and our apprentice teacher, Dwayne Dawson, for all the energy they are putting into the E CITY program at JFK!
Congratulations to the winners of the JFK Business Plan Competition:

1st Place:  Angel Norvell       “Angel’s Goodies”

2nd Place:  Marcus Baker      “Baker Bars”

3rd Place:  Tanielle Donner    “Tanielle’s Candy Belts”

Thank you to four-time Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher, Tanisha Jackson-Long, for her fabulous leadership during this program.

Dwayne Dawson served as an apprentice.

Success Tech Academy- Fall 2006

Guest speakers are a regular feature in every E CITY program, and students give them great reviews.  Themes that students seem to remember long after the speaker is gone are:

  • Never give up.
  • Don’t listen to people who say you can’t.
  • You’re going to make mistakes, but be persistent.
  • Hearing successful people reflect on what it takes to be who you want to be in life.
  • Opportunity can strike at any time- be alert.
  • Don’t take “no” for an answer.

We are thankful for all of our guest speakers who bring “real life” to E CITY students.

Among the favorite guest speakers is E CITY Founder, John Zitzner.  “Mr. Z,” as he is fondly known (or “The Original JZ” to some), guest lectures at every E CITY program.  He sometimes tells about his own entrepreneurial experiences, but at Success Tech he chose to deliver one of the most important lessons in the E CITY curriculum- Economics of One Unit of Sale, and Income Statement.  First and foremost, our students need to understand the costs that go into their product or service, and then how to price them in order to make a reasonable profit.  Mr. Z teaches it with a sufficient number of examples and enough humor to send everyone home smiling…and understanding!

Congratulations to the winners of the Success Tech business plan competition:

1st Place:    Ashley Richards                                  “Cheesecakes by Ashley”

2nd Place:   Alyacia Appling & Demetri Ambers        “Exclusive Signs”

3rd Place:    Everton Irons                                       “Universal Bakery”

Thank you, Darlene Clinkscales, for being our Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher at Success Tech, and to Rita Dent, for serving as the apprentice teacher.
